StepForward BGC校で働く先生を紹介します。

27回目の今回は、「Elanie先生」に、英語講師になったきっかけ、先生自身の性格や趣味などについてインタビューをしました。

インタビュー（日本語）

• 出身地は？

セブ市です。

• 大学の専攻は？

初等教育の学士（一般教育）を取得しています。

• 講師の経験は？　

2014年から現在までです。

• 講師として好きなレッスンは？

ビジネス英語と一般英語です。

• 趣味は？

瞑想、ウォーキングやランニング、料理、旅行、新しいものやスキルを学ぶこと、また、TEDトークやポッドキャスト、YouTube動画といったインスピレーションを与えてくれるビジネスなどの講演を聞くことです。

• 出身地はどこですか？あなたが生まれ育った場所について教えてください。

母の故郷の東ネグロス州で生まれ、祖父母に育てられました。小さく居心地のいい場所ですが、もっと広い世界を知りたかったので、大学卒業後はセブに移り住みました。そこでは、人生を築き上げていく方法を学びました。母が住んでいた街ということもあってか、セブは私にとっても故郷になりました。

• 自分自身をどのように表現しますか？

仕事では、目標を達成するためのさまざまなアプローチに柔軟に対応できます。仕事の内容が、教える仕事であっても経営に関する仕事であってもそれは変わりません。また、新しいことを受け入れて学ぶ姿勢もあり、自分を成長させることができます。全体としては、常に生産性や効率性のある戦力でいられるように、上手なコミュニケーションや人との上手な関わり方、批判的思考を発揮できるようにしています。

プライベートでは、できるだけ自分の時間が活用できるようにさまざまな状況に合わせています。新しい出会いを通じて、自分のネットワークを広げるようにしています。また、仕事でもプライベートでも、助けが必要な人には手を差し伸べています。アダム・グラントの「ギブアンドテイクの原則」によると、私はかなりギバー（与える人）なほうですが、実はみずがめ座です。^^

• 英語講師になったきっかけは何ですか？

子供の頃から、とくに英語を使って世界中のさまざまな人たちと関わってきました。また、英語の教科書や物語を読んで、人や文化、場所には面白いことや素晴らしいことがたくさんあると気づきました。小さいころ読んだ本に「言葉はあなたの学校にいる人たちと関わるためのコミュニケーションツールだ。そして、英語のような国際語は、学校の外に広がる大きな世界に羽ばたくのにも役立つ」という一文がありました。これが私の好奇心を刺激したのです。

小学校を卒業したとき、ゴッドマザー（注：洗礼式に立ち会い、宗教上の保護者としての役割を担う女性）が私に辞書をくれました。辞書には「あなたの言葉の限界は、あなたの世界の限界だ」という引用文が載っていました。高校で、私は素晴らしい英語の先生に出会いました。そして、自分も将来、彼女のように人にインスピレーションを与え、夢の実現をサポートする存在になりたいと思いました。スティーブ・ジョブズは、点と点をつなげる話をしたことがあります。「点をつなげるということは、私たちが人生で成し遂げたことや得たものに感謝するということを意味する。私たちが正しい道を歩むかは、すべて神の手にゆだねられている」というものです。先生をする上でもっともやりがいを感じるのは、知識を共有するだけでなく、お互いをもっとよく知りながら知識をどんどん広めていき、そのなかで学びを得ていると実感するときです。

• 日本人の生徒に英語を教えることはどうですか？

日本のみなさんに教えるのは奇跡です。始めて1週間後に、日本の文化や考え方が大好きになったのですが、これは予想もしなかったことでした。私には、ほっとするような、なじみのあるものに感じられます。日本の文化や理念がよくわかるにつれて、自分も成長することができています。生徒さんが決意を固め、目標に向かって努力する姿勢は素晴らしく、インスピレーションを与えてくれます。クラスでは、生徒さんが自主的に学んで言語を応用し、既成概念にとらわれずに英語を使って考える力を身に付けられるようにベストを尽くしています。みなさんが笑ってくれるのがうれしいです。そして、クラスの中だけでなく課外活動でも、みなさんと一緒の時間を楽しく過ごしています。

• 休みの日は何をしますか？

アウトドア派なので、よく外出します。知り合いや新しい人に会ったり、新しいものにトライして学ぶ機会を作ったりして、充実した時間を過ごすのが好きです。「経験」が最高の教師なので、新しいことに挑戦し、その日の終わりにはその経験を振り返っています。世界で起こっていることからたくさん学べば、実践的な人間になることができます。この経験は、生徒さんと共有できます。私は、父や母、親戚もそうですが、料理が好きです。みな料理上手です。また、歌うのも好きで、歌を歌って気分を上げたり、自分を表現したりしています。私は何でもトライしたいタイプなので、「やってみない？」とだれかに言われたら、「やる」と答えてしまうと思います。

もちろん、体を休めたいときには寝ます。私も人間ですから。^^

• Where are you from? Can you tell about the city where you were born and raised?

I was actually born and raised in Negros Oriental, my mom’s hometown, and taken care by my grandparents. It was a small and comfortable place. But since I want to learn more about the bigger world, after finishing my university, I decided to move to Cebu and figured out how to create my own life there. It has been my own hometown, maybe because my mom had lived there, too.

How do you describe yourself? 

When it comes to work, I am flexible with any approach needed to make sure that the goal is reached, in both teaching and administrative work. I am also open-minded to learning new things from my team that may improve myself when needed. Overall, I have consistently demonstrated communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking abilities in every aspect of my specific job to be more productive and to be an efficient asset.

When it comes to my “being myself”, I am flexible to any circumstances just to make sure that my time is maximized and used well. I am open to meeting new acquaintances to extend my network and to help anybody who may need both professionally, and personally. Based on Adam Grant’s “Give and Take principle”, I am much more of a giver. But I am an AQUARIUS. ^^

• What made you an English teacher?

Since I was a child, I have engaged with many kinds of people in the world, especially using English. And reading English textbooks and stories made me realized there are many interesting and great things to discover from people, cultures, and places. At a young age, I found a phrase from a book I read “”…LANGUAGE IS A COMMUNICATION TOOL THAT HELPS YOU TO RELATE TO THE PEOPLE IN YOUR SCHOOL. AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE LIKE ENGLISH, ALSO HELPS YOU TO DEVELOP TO THE BIGGER WORLD OUTSIDE SCHOOL…””. This activated my curiosity.

When I graduated in Elementary, my godmother gave me a dictionary with a quote, “”THE LIMITS OF YOUR LANGUAGE ARE THE LIMITS OF YOUR WORLD.””. And in High School, I met a great English teacher for me. I got inspire to be like her in the future-be an inspiration to others and helping them to make their dreams come true. According to Steve Jobs’s when he said about connecting the dots, “”By connecting the dots, it means we are grateful of what we have done and we’ve got in life, it is all from God to lead us to the right way. “” The most satisfying thing in teaching is to not only share knowledge but to circulate them drastically as we get to know each other more, and to learn making friends.

• How do you like teaching English specially to Japanese learners?

Being a teacher to Japanese students was through a miracle “KISEKI”. I didn’t expect that at first, but after a week, I really fell in love with most of their cultures and principles. It felt like home and familiar to me. These helped me a lot to be a better person as I understand them better, too. Their dedication and determination to reach their goals is commendable and inspirational. In class, we can do our best together for them to learn independently and apply their learnings, and that they could learn to think outside the box using English. It is easy for me to make them smile and it is one of the things I enjoy with them not only in class but also in extra curricular activities throughout their learning program.

• What do you do in your free time?

In my free time, I often go out of the house. I am an outdoor person. I prefer being productive outside to learn new things as I meet familiar faces, meet new people, and try new experiences. Since “Experience ” is the best teacher for me, I often try something new and reflect at the end of the day. There are a lot of things to learn about what is going on in the world, this could help me to become a more practical person which I could share with my students, too. Specifically, I like cooking, just like my dad, my mom, and my other relatives. We are good cooks. I like singing any time of the day to uplift my mood or to express myself towards others. Because of my flexiblity, when you ask me if I can do something, I may just say ‘yes’…

Of course, when I need physical rest, I sleep. I am human, too. ^^
