StepForward BGC校で働く先生を紹介します。

22回目の今回は、「Marie先生」に、英語講師になったきっかけ、先生自身の性格や趣味などについてインタビューをしました。

インタビュー（日本語）

• 出身地は？

リサール州のビナンゴナンの出身です。ラグーナ湖の湖畔にある町なので、魚が豊富です。バンゴンは「起き上がる」、ビナンゴナンは「起き上がるところ」という意味です。自分を変えて新たなスタートを切りたい人にはぴったりの場所です。漁港もあるので、市場では獲れたての魚や生きた魚が手に入ります。魚のバーベキューパーティがおすすめです。

• 大学の専攻は？

最初、Philippine School of Business Administrationで会計学を学びました。会計士になるという母やおばの夢を、私も追いかけました。私はさまざまな人たちと交流できる分野で働きたいと思っていました。しかし結局、土木工学を学びました。自分の好きな絵を描くという仕事をしながら大きなチームで働くことが夢でした。また、工学製図を教えようとも思いました。

• 講師の経験は？　

以前は韓国のESL学校にいて、パートタイムで働いていました。生徒さんはすべてオンラインで、年齢もレベルもさまざまでした。私自身子供がいるので、子供と接するのが専門です。

• 講師として好きなレッスンは？

特定の職業にフォーカスしたレッスンをするのが好きです。例えば、建設のための本です。大学や経験を通じて学んだことを共有できます。

• 趣味は？

絵を描くことに興味があります。子供の頃からアニメのキャラクターを描いてきました。AutoCADを学ぶ資格コースで学んでいたこともあります。今は、ポートレートなどのさまざまなスケッチスタイルにも挑戦しています。

• 出身地はどこですか？あなたが生まれ育った場所について教えてください。

リサール州のビナンゴナンという町ですが、ここにいたのは子供時代の半分だけです。小学校と高校のときはアンティポロ市に住んでいました。アンティポロはペースの速い環境です。ライフスタイルは、田舎と都会の生活が混ざったものです。

• 自分自身をどのように表現しますか？

仲のいい友達や仲間と一緒にいるときはおしゃべりになりますが、初めての人たちや場所では静かになります。理性的な人間でいるように心がけているものの、無神経な行動に目をつぶることはできません。ほとんどの人が私の性格を誤解していますが、それは私が「ふたご座だから」らしいです。

• 英語講師になったきっかけは何ですか？

家では英語を話しています。夫がオランダ人で、英語は好きな教科の1つでもありました。最初はただのパートタイムの仕事だったのですが、最終的に大好きになりました。それが、私が教師の仕事に戻ってきた理由です。

• 日本人の生徒に英語を教えることはどうですか？

日本の生徒さんの学ぶ姿勢に特に感銘を受けています。日本の方は自分に厳しく、質のよい教材やカリキュラムを求めます。フォーカスすべきスキルをしっかり理解しており、さまざまな訓練や練習をオープンに受け入れてくれます。

• 休みの日は何をしますか？

YouTube動画やドラマをよく観ます。音楽もときどき聴きます。特に聴くのはKpopです。友達と一緒のときには、おしゃべりをして過ごします。

Interview（English）

• Hometown

I came from Binangonan, Rizal. It’s a town by the coast of Laguna lake so it’s abundant of fish. “Bangon” means get up, “Binangonan” means it’s a place where you get up. If you want to change yourself and start anew, it’s a good place to go. It also has a fishing port, so fresh and live fish can be found in the market. It’s good to have grilled fish party there.

• Major in University

Initially, I took up Accountancy in Philippine School of Business Administration. I wanted to follow my mom and aunt’s dream to be Accountants. Apparently, I realized that I wanted to work in a field where I can interact with a lot of different people. Eventually, I took up Civil Engineering. I dreamt of working with a large team of workers while doing what I love, drawing. I even got the idea of teaching Engineering drawing.

• Teaching Experience

I was formerly employed in a Korean ESL school as a part-timer. The students were all online and they vary in ages and levels. Being a mom, my expertise is handling children.

• Favorite Lessons as A Teacher

As a teacher, I like teaching lessons that focus on certain professions; for example, Book for Construction. It enables me to share what I’ve learned in the university and experience.

• Interest

I am really interested in drawing. Since I was a child, I draw anime characters. There was a time when I enroled in a certificate course to study AutoCad. Also, I am currently trying out different sketching styles like portrait.

• Where are you from? Can you tell about the city where you were born and raised?

I’m from the province of Rizal. My town is called Binangonan. However, I only spent half of my childhood there. During my elementary and high school days, I lived in Antipolo City. It has a fast-paced environment. The lifestyle of the people are mixed: countryside + city life.

• How do you describe yourself? 

I’m a talkative person when with close friends and peers, but I’m silent when I’m new in a group or place. I always try to be sensible, however, I also don’t tolerate insensitive behaviors. Most people misinterprets my personality, and they said it’s because I’m a Gemini.

• What made you an English teacher?

My household language is English. Given that my husband is Dutch, it was also one of my favorite subjects in school. At first, it was only my part-time job. But I eventually get to love what I’m doing. That’s the reason why I came back to teaching.

• How do you like teaching English specially to Japanese learners?

I specifically admire their learning attitude. Japanese learners are strict to themselves and they like good quality materials and curriculum. They know exactly what skills they need to enhance and they are open to different drills and practices.

• What do you do in your free time?

During my free time, I usually watch YouTube videos, and dramas. I sometimes listen to music, especially Kpop. But if I’m with friends, I spend my time chatting with them.
