StepForward BGC校で働く先生を紹介します。

24回目の今回は、「Jee先生」に、英語講師になったきっかけ、先生自身の性格や趣味などについてインタビューをしました。

インタビュー（日本語）

• 出身地は？

フィリピン中部のビサヤ地方にある、シキホールという小さくのどかな島が私の故郷です。「イスラ・デル・フエゴ」（火の島）という名前でも知られています。シキホールは、島独自のヒーリングアートや観光客に人気の魅力的な景勝地として、フィリピン全土に知られています。

• 大学の専攻は？

大学の学位 – 心理学学士号
卒業後の研修 – 継続的現職研修
修士号 – ガイダンスおよびカウンセリング修士号（在学中）

• 講師の経験は？　

長年にわたって教育分野に携わり、生徒のメンタル面のサポートをしてきました。今は、教える仕事を模索し見いだしてきて4か月になります。一般英語からビジネス英語まで、世界中から集まったさまざまな生徒さんに教えています。

• 講師として好きなレッスンは？

教育において「好きな」という言葉は、かなり極端な言葉だとずっと感じてきました。教えるのが「楽な」レッスンはないと思うので、好きなレッスンはないように思います。
私はいつも、それぞれの科目やレッスンを別個の学問分野ととらえています。ですから、一般的にはむずかしいと思われていても、教える前に自分が徹底的・包括的に理解しておかなければならないのです。
もちろん、時間がかかるものもあります。また、理解するのが特に大変な概念にはもどかしさを感じることもありますが、ものごとに対する「なぜ」が、より深い理解へと導いてくれます。これが教えるという仕事を充実したものにしてくれます。

• 趣味は？

家で充実した時間を過ごしたり、トレイルハイキングをしたりするのが好きです。ときどき海や山の景色、日の出や日没、空を眺めるといった、シンプルながらも素晴らしい自然の景色を楽しんでいます。こうすると、思考がクリアになり集中力も高まるので、目の前に立ちはだかる課題に取り組む準備ができます。

• 出身地はどこですか？あなたが生まれ育った場所について教えてください。

セブ市に住んでいますが、シキホール島で生まれ育ちました。ここは、島にまつわるミステリアスな物語のほかに、緑豊かな自然、手つかずの砂浜、色鮮やかな海洋生物にも恵まれています。シキホールは、魅惑的・神秘的・魅力的という3つの言葉がぴったりの場所です！

• 自分自身をどのように表現しますか？

1. 情熱的で、学びのマインドがあると思います。
2. 人を力づけ、その人の生活に大きな変化をもたらすことにいつもやりがいを感じてきました。
3. 熱心で、人生に前向きな考えを持っています。
4. メンタルヘルスとウエルネスを支持し、擁護しています。

• 英語講師になったきっかけは何ですか？

さまざまなバックグラウンドを持つ生徒さんを教え、サポートすることに情熱を注いできました。生徒さんが英語の学習を重視しているのがわかるため、上達をサポートし、よりよい生活を手にできるようにベストを尽くしています。私が英語を教えることで、生徒さんが文化を完全に理解し、コミュニティを築いてほしいと思っています。ESL教師になろうと思ったのは、生徒さんが言語の課題を克服して目標を達成し、成功するサポートをしたいと思ったからです。

• 日本人の生徒に英語を教えることはどうですか？

日本の生徒さんは私のお気に入りです！知的で勤勉、意欲的に学んでいます！また、礼儀正しく思いやりがあり、熱心に学習に取り組んでいます。私も日本文化を学ぶのが好きです。生徒さんのことがよくわかれば、学習経験の向上につながります。

• 休みの日は何をしますか？

トレイルハイキングや、飼っている小さなポメラニアンとの散歩、自然に触れるひととき、家族との充実した時間など、心を満たしてくれるアクティビティが好きです。キッチンにいるのも好きで、さまざまな食材を試して満足のいく食事を作るのが楽しみです。

Interview（English）

• Hometown

My hometown is located in the central Visayas region of the Philippines. This is a small laidback island called Siquijor, also known as Isla del Fuego or “Island of Fire. It is known throughout the country for its unique healing arts and its enchanting scenic places that are popular for tourists.

• Major in University

College Degree – BS Psychology
Post Graduate Studies – Continuing Professional Education
MAster’s Degree – MS in Guidance and Counseling (ongoing)

• Teaching Experience

I have been in the educational field for quite a while, supporting the mental wellness of the students. Currently, I have been exploring and uncovering the world of teaching for 4 months now. I have been handling different kinds of students from different parts of the globe ranging from General English to Business English.

• Favorite Lessons as A Teacher

I believe that every lesson is unique and we can learn different things from it. For me, my favorite lesson is something that would allow engagement and provide maximum learning to my students… It doesn’t matter what the topic is but what is more important is how the learning took place and embedded in the minds of my students while also gaining valuable perspectives about life.

• Interest

I like spending quality time at home and going trail hiking, sometimes enjoying ocean views, the mountains, witnessing sunrise and sunsets, looking at the sky and just appreciating simple yet amazing sights of nature. These helps me gain some clarity and focus so I will be ready to take on the challenges that come my way.

• Where are you from? Can you tell about the city where you were born and raised?

I am live in Cebu City but I was born and raised in the island province of Siquijor. Aside from the mystic stories surrounding the island, the place is blessed with lush green natures, pristine beaches and colorful marine life. Three words that would describe the place best are Captivating, Mystical, Enchanting!

• How do you describe yourself? 

1. I consider myself as passionate and a person with a learning mindset.
2. I have always been motivated to empower others and make a profound change in the lives of people.
3. I am enthusiastic and have a poistive outlook about life
4. I love advocating for people’s mental health and wellness

• What made you an English teacher?

I always have this genuine love for teaching and assisting students from diverse backgrounds. I recognized the importance of English learning for my students so I commit myself to help them progress and go further in life. I want them to fully understand cultures and build communities through teaching them the English language. Hence, I decided to be an ESL Teacher with the desire to help students overcome language challenges, assist them in their goals and help them succeed.

• How do you like teaching English specially to Japanese learners?

Japanese learners are my favorites! They are intelligent, hardworking and are enthusiastic to learn! They are courteous, respectful and committed students as well. In fact, I love to learn more about Japanese culture that would allow me to better understand my students and enhance their learning experience.

• What do you do in your free time?

I love doing enriching activities during my freetime like trail hiking, taking our little pomeranian for a walk, being close to nature and spending quality time with my family. I also love being in the kitchen and experimenting with various ingredients to make satisfying meals.
