StepForward BGC校で働く先生を紹介します。

17回目の今回は、13年の英語指導歴があり、生徒から人気が高い「JP先生」に、英語講師になったきっかけ、先生自身の性格や趣味などについてインタビューをしました。

インタビュー（日本語）

• 出身地は？

フィリピン、メトロマニラ、ケソン市で、「星の街」とも呼ばれています。

• 大学の専攻は？

歴史学を専攻しました。

• 講師の経験は？　

フィリピンで英語を教える教師として13年以上の経験があります。日本人、中国人、韓国人、台湾人、トルコ人、ベトナム人など、異なる国籍、文化背景をもつ学習者の方々に教えてきた経験があります。マンツーマンレッスンやグループクラスの指導を通じて、異なるレベルの学生に一般英語とビジネス英語の講義を行ってきました。

• 講師として好きなレッスンは？

スピーキングとディスカッションです。

• 趣味は？

ボウリング、歴史や旅行のドキュメンタリーを観ることです。

• 出身地はどこですか？あなたが生まれ育った場所について教えてください。

私はフィリピンのヌエバ・エシハ州で生まれました。ヌエバ・エシハ州は、フィリピンの中部ルソン地方に位置する内陸の州です。この州は、中部ルソンで最も広い土地を持つ州です。加えて、「フィリピンの米穀倉」として全国的に知られていて、フィリピン国内で最も多くの米を生産しています。

• 自分自身をどのように表現しますか？

私はねずみ年生まれです。射手座で内向的な性格です。教師としては、情熱的な教育者です。私の教育のモットーは「平凡な教師は教える。良い教師は説明する。優れた教師は示す。偉大な教師はインスパイアする。-ウィリアム・アーサー・ウォード」です。生徒がより情熱的な教師から教わることで、学習過程においてもっとインスパイアされ、学びを楽しむようになると思います。これにより、生徒さんが私を、言語の学びの旅で成功するためのインスピレーションとしてもつことを願っています。教師として、私たちはインスピレーションに満ちた人生の物語を集め、生徒さんたちの人生にポジティブな影響を与えることができると信じています。

• 英語講師になったきっかけは何ですか？

ビジネスやカジュアルな環境で英語を上手に話すことができれば、より多くの機会が開かれ、人生が大きく変わることがあります。良い英語のスピーキングスキルを持つ人には、フィリピンだけでなく海外でも多くの仕事や高給のポジションが提供されます。しかし、英語を学ぶ際の挑戦、困難、苦労を考えると、英語を習得するのは難しいです。非ネイティブの英語学習者にインスピレーションを与えることは、常に私の使命でした。私自身がネイティブの英語話者ではないので、英語についてすべてを覚えるのが学生にとってどれほど大変か理解しています。

• 日本人の生徒に英語を教えることはどうですか？

他の国籍の方々と比べて、日本人の生徒さんは一般的に非常に行儀が良いです。彼らは勉強熱心で一生懸命です。

• 休みの日は何をしますか？

ドキュメンタリーを観ること以外に、室内で過ごす時間を楽しんでいます。私は家にいることを好むタイプで、他の人と多くの時間を過ごすことは好みません。しかし、心地よいと感じる人々との深く意味のある会話を楽しんでいます。

• Teaching Experience

I have over thirteen years of hands-on teaching experience as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in the Philippines, I have extensive experience in teaching learners from different cultural surroundings like Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Turkish and Vietnamese. I facilitate General and Business English lectures to students of different levels through one-on-one and group class instructions.

• Where are you from? Can you tell about the city where you were born and raised?

I was born in Nueva Ecija, officially the Province of Nueva Ecija, it is a landlocked province in the Philippines located in the Central Luzon region.Nueva Ecija is the largest province of Central Luzon in terms of land area.The province is nationally known as the Rice Granary of the Philippines, producing the largest rice yield in the country.

• How do you describe yourself? 

I was born in year of the rat. I’m a Sagittarian and an introvert. As a teacher, I am a highly passionate teaching professional. My motto as a teacher is “”The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.-William Arthur Ward. Students need to have more passionate teachers for them to be more inspired, involved, and excited in the learning process. With this, I have high hopes that they make me their inspiration to strive harder and become successful in their language learning journey. Being a teacher, we can collect inspiring life stories and create a positive impact on the lives of our students.

• What made you an English teacher?

Being able to communicate well in English for business or casual setting opens more opportunities and can really change your life. Numerous jobs and higher paying positions are offered to those who have good English speaking skills; not only in the Philippines but also abroad. However, with all the challenges, obstacles, difficulties, and struggles in learning English; it is difficult to become successful. It has always been a calling to serve as an inspiration to non-native English learners. I am not a native English speaker myself, so I understand how tough it is for students to remember everything about English.

• How do you like teaching English specially to Japanese learners?

Among all other nationalities, Japanese students are generally very well behaved. They are typically studious and hard working.

• What do you do in your free time?

Apart from watching documentaries, I enjoy spending time indoors. I’m a homebody, I prefer not to spend lots of time interacting with other people. But I enjoy deep and meaningful conversations with people whom I feel comfortable with.
