StepForward BGC校で働く先生を紹介します。

第5回目の今回は、ビジネス英語を学ぶ生徒から評価の高い「Pauline先生」です。英語講師になったきっかけ、先生自身の性格や趣味などについてインタビューをしました。

インタビュー（日本語）

• 出身地は？

私は、マニラ首都圏パラニャーケで生まれ育ちました。

• 大学の専攻は？

理学士号 – 心理学専攻

• 講師の経験は？　

ESL教師として5年間教えています。 ビジネス英語と一般英語を教えています。 ESLでは3年間、主に企業の従業員を対象にTOEICのリーディングとリスニングのテストを突破するためのトレーニングを行ってきました。 それ以外には、高校で3年間教鞭をとり、定性調査、アカデミックライティング、オーラルコミュニケーション、リーディング＆ライティング、フィリピン文学を教えました。

• 講師として好きなレッスンは？

ビジネス英語の科目を教えるのが好きです。 その理由は生徒たちが自信を持って英語を話すビジネスパーソンとして、よりよく自分をアピールできるようにサポートできるからです。 同時に、生徒たちが日本以外のさまざまな国での仕事の経験を話してくれるので、 世界のさまざまな地域のビジネスについて学ぶことができる絶好の機会でもあります。 高校講師として学校で教えていたとき、私は文学を教えるのが一番好きでした。

• 趣味は？

百科事典、科学雑誌、研究書、小説、漫画、そしてレビューやツイートなどの個人的なアカウントまで、私は本を読むことに喜びを感じます。一方で、部屋を掃除したり、犬と遊んだり、好きな歌を歌ったりと、自分の趣味を育むことに安らぎを感じています。

• 出身地はどこですか？あなたが生まれ育った場所について教えてください。

パラニャーケは、高級ホテル、リゾート、カジノが立ち並ぶことから、エンターテイメントシティとして知られています。 また、国際空港、フィリピン各地に向かう総合バスターミナル、3つの大きなショッピングモールがこの街にあるため、 パラニャーケは住むのにとても便利な場所です。 私が大学時代、マニラで4年間寮生活をした以外はずっとパラニャーケに住んでいます。

• 自分自身をどのように表現しますか？

私は内向的で、寝るのが大好きなワーカホリックな人間です。 一人で楽しむことが好きで、仕事にはとても熱心です。 自分の仕事に誇りをもっているので、平凡な仕事ぶりには耐えられません。 しかしバランスは大切なので、睡眠を趣味としています。眠って気持ちを落ち着かせ、疲弊した身体をリセットしています。

• 英語講師になったきっかけは何ですか？

もともと教師を目指していたわけではないのですが、自分に合う業界を模索しているうちに（教師があっていると）気づきました。 自分の感じていること、考えていることを十分に表現できない環境で働くことは、私には難しいです。 専攻している心理学には教育学も含まれているため、教職に就いてみようと思いました。 英語と心理学関連の科目を教えることに一番自信があったので、ESL業界と学校（高校）の両方で働き始めました。

• 日本人の生徒に英語を教えることはどうですか？

私は、中国人、日本人、アラブ人と、いくつかの国籍の人たちに英語を教えてきました。 日本人の生徒に英語を教えることは、私にとって最も実り多く、充実した経験だったと思います。 生徒たちは礼儀正しく、彼らの仕事に対する姿勢や人生観は、私が大切にしている理念と近く、見習いたいと思っています。

• 休みの日は何をしますか？

暇なときは愛犬と遊んでいます。かくれんぼやキャッチボールをするようにしています。 時には、ただ外を歩いて、風や日差しを楽しむこともあります。 また、エンターテインメントやドキュメンタリーなどの動画を見て自由な時間を過ごすこともあります。

• Hometown

I was born and raised in Parañaque City, Metro Manila.

• Major in University

Bachelor in Science – Major in Psychology

• Teaching Experience

I have been teaching as an ESL Teacher for 5 years. I teach Business and General English. For three years in ESL, I mainly train Corporate employees to ace their test in TOEIC READING AND LISTENING. Aside from that, I taught in a school as a Senior High School Instructor for 3 years where I taught Qualitative Research, Academic Writing, Oral Communication, Reading and Writng and Philippine Literature.

• Favorite Lessons as A Teacher

I love teaching Business English subjects because I get to help our students better project themselves as confident business people speaking the English language. At the same time, this is a perfect time for me to learn more about business from different parts of the world as the students share their experiences of their work in various countries apart from Japan. When I was teaching in a school as a Senior Highschool instructor, I enjoyed teaching Literature the most.

• Interest

I find joy in reading books – encyclopedias, scientific journals, research, fiction, mangas and even personal accounts like reviews or tweets. But I find peace in nurturing my hobbies like cleaning my room, playing with my dogs and jamming to my favorite songs!

• Where are you from? Can you tell about the city where you were born and raised?

Parañaque – It is known as the Entertainment City because of the number of luxury hotels, resorts and casinos located in it. Also, living in Parañaque is synonymous to living in convenience as the international airport, integrated bus terminal (departing to different parts of the Philippines) and three big malls are all found in this city. I lived in Parañaque whole my life except during my university years where I lived in Manila City for 4 years in a dormitory.

• How do you describe yourself? 

I am an introvert and a workaholic person who loves to sleep! I love enjoying things on my own and is very committed to working. I take pride in what I do so I find mediocre work performance intolerable. But I also acknowledge the concept of balance hence I do consider sleeping as my hobby. I sleep in order to calm myself and reset my body if it’s in threadbare. Teehee!

• What made you an English teacher?

Teaching is not something I initally wanted to do but then realized in the middle of my quest of looking what industry fits for me. I am unable to stomach working in an environment where I cannot fully express what I feel and think. I tried teaching because my major – Psychology – also encompasses Education. I felt confident the most in teaching English and any Psychology-related subjects so I started working both in the ESL industry and traditional schools.

• How do you like teaching English specially to Japanese learners?

I taught English to a couple of nationalities – Chinese, Japanese and Arabs. I think teaching English to Japanese students has been the most fruitful and fulfilling experience for me. The students are polite and their work ethics and perspective in life are something I hope to emulate on top of the principles I value.

• What do you do in your free time?

I play with my dogs in my free time. We try to play hide and seek and catch. Sometimes, we just walk outside and enjoy the breeze and the sunlight. Sometimes, I spend my free time watching entertaining and informative videos.
