StepForward BGC校で働く先生を紹介します。

第7回目の今回は、経験豊富な「Bern先生」に、英語講師になったきっかけ、先生自身の性格や趣味などについてインタビューをしました。

• 出身地はどこですか？あなたが生まれ育った場所について教えてください。

私はパシグ市出身です。マニラ首都圏の中では小さな都市ですが、豊かな文化や古い教会、そして良き政治家や指導者がいたことで知られています。

• 自分自身をどのように表現しますか？

旅行好きにもつながりますが、新しいことに挑戦するのが好きです。 2018年から旅に出るようになり、これまでにフィリピンの10州以上とアジアの1カ国を訪れました。 探検すること、地元の人と話すこと、伝統的な料理を食べること、新しい人に会うことが好きです。 また、読書もとても好きです。英語の本を読み始めたのは高校生のときです。 それ以来、図書館に通って本を読んだり、社会人になってからは、書籍を買うようになりました。今は、紙の書籍と電子書籍の両方を読んでいます。

• 英語講師になったきっかけは何ですか？

英語の先生になるのは、当初の予定ではありませんでした。 本当は理科の教師になりたかったのです。 しかし、英語を勉強しているうちに、この教科のすべてが、特に言語が好きになりました。 そして、英語の先生になるということは、良いコミュニケーターでなければならないということであり、それは生徒たちに伝えたいスキルでもあるのだと気づきました。

• 日本人の生徒に英語を教えることはどうですか？

日本人の生徒は勤勉で、授業に興味と熱意があるので、私は日本人の生徒を教えるのが好きです。 英語を学ぶのは簡単なことではありませんが、彼らは常に講師の言うことに耳を傾け、改善すべき点には注意を払います。 授業のいたるところで確実に上達が見られます。私は教えることがとても好きで、生徒たちもそうである。これは、とても合っているということだと思います。

• 休みの日は何をしますか？

日曜日は唯一自由な日です。 休日は、Netflixで映画やドラマを見たり、今読んでいる本をちょっと読んだりしています。 また、事前に約束があるときは、友人と会っておいしいものを食べるようにしています。

• Where are you from? Can you tell about the city where you were born and raised?

I am from Pasig City. It’s just a small city within Metro Manila but it is known for having rich cultures, some old churches, and a leader with the cleanest record when it comes to good governance.

• How do you describe yourself? 

I love trying new things which is connected to my love for traveling. I started going on a trip in 2018 and so far, I have been to more than 10 provinces in the Philippines and one country in Asia. I like exploring, talking to locals, eating traditional food, and meeting new people. I also love reading so much. I started reading English books when I was in high school. Since then, I went to libraries to read and when I was already working, I made sure to buy some physical books as well. Right now, I am trying to read more books simultaneously using physical and electronic copies.

• What made you an English teacher?

Teaching is not something I initially wanted to do but then realized in the middle of my quest of looking what industry fits for me. I am unable to stomach working in an environment where I cannot fully express what I feel and think. I tried teaching because my major – Psychology – also encompasses Education. I felt confident the most in teaching English and any Psychology-related subjects so I started working both in the ESL industry and traditional schools.

• How do you like teaching English specially to Japanese learners?

I love teaching Japanese students because they are diligent and they show interest and enthusiasm in class. Learning English is not that easy but they always try their best to follow their teachers and take note of the things that they have to improve. True enough, improvement can be seen all throughout the classes. I am passionate in teaching and my students are passionate in learning so I guess, WE MATCH. 🙂

• What do you do in your free time?

Sunday is the only day that I am free. On my free time, or day-off, I watch a movie or series on Netflix and I try to read some pages from the books that I am currently reading. When an appointment is made beforehand, I also try my best to meet my friends and eat something delicious.
